How to Avoid Making Soggy French Toast
There’s nothing quite like the smell of french toast in the morning. There’s also nothing more frustrating than taking a bite of soggy french toast. Here are a few tricks for cooking your french toast to perfection.
Place on a Rack to Warm: Immediately after removing your french toast from the pan, either serve instantly or place it on a rack and into the oven to keep warm. Do not sit the french toast on a plate and let it sit as you continue to cook as it will create moisture, causing your french toast to become soggy.
*If you prefer french toast that is very toasty you can place the french toast into a preheated 350 degree oven for a few minutes.
Avoid Over Soaking: Be careful not to soak your bread in the custard too long. Consider the thickness and density of the type of bread you are using. In most cases, you will only need to dip the bread in the custard to coat the bread, only for a second or two.
Heat Pan Properly: French toast will be soggy if you fail to use the proper heat. If you cook your french toast on too high heat, you may fry the outside of the toast too fast, leaving the inside of the french toast undone. To avoid this mistake, preheat your pan to medium-low heat.
Simple French Toast Ingredients
You only need a few simple ingredients to make the perfect french toast.
French Toast Bread: Brioche is my favorite bread to use for making french toast. You can also use French Baguette or Challah (egg bread). Brioche, French Baguette, and Challah Bread should all be easily found in the bakery section of your local grocery store.
French Toast Custard: To make the custard for this simple french toast your will need eggs, heavy cream, pure vanilla extract, salt, and cinnamon. That’s all.
- 1 loaf brioche
- 3/4 cup heavy cream or milk
- 4 eggs
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons of vanilla
- 1/4 cup sugar
- berries and maple for topping
- Preheat oven to warm setting or 175 degrees.
- In large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix until well incorporated.
- Transfer custard into a shallow dish such as a pie pan. This will make dipping the bread in the custard easier.
- Preheat a nonstick pan or griddle to medium-low heat.
- Dip toast in custard, coating both sides of the bread.
- Brush pan with 1 tablespoon of butter and place bread in the pan with about an inch of space between slices. Cook each side until golden, 3-5 minutes. Stay near the pan to monitor the toast.
- As each piece of toast is done frying, transfer it to a wire cooling rack over a baking sheet and keep in the warm oven time to serve.
- Top with fresh whipped cream, fresh berries, maple, and or powdered sugar and serve.
